TL testing is an objective, scientific method of dating archeological items, developed mainly by Oxford University and our founder Doreen Stoneham and our Lead Scientist Dr Greg Adamiec worked at the Research Laboratory for Archeology at Oxford University prior to working at Oxford Authentication Ltd and has extensive experience in luminescence dating methods. We perform both the fine grain method (for pottery) and the pre-dose method (for porcelain and certain clays). At the point of requesting a test, the client also provides the presumed date of manufacture, which is quoted on our certificate. A sample is taken either at our laboratory or by one of our fully trained agents. We then perform the thermoluminescence test. Because the annual amount of absorbed radiation needs to be estimated for which not all data is known, we quote an age range of ca. +/-20%.  So for example, if we quote an age range of between 350 and 500 years ago, this means it could have been fired in the Ming dynasty or the Kangxi era. The expert also performs a stylistic examination and classification, verifies the provenance, and considers all the material's test results, which may involve TL, X-ray and C-scan, FTIR and compositional analysis.  All these methods are important in establishing the authenticity of a ceramic antiquity.  Our reports are accepted worldwide as a stamp of endorsement by museums, auction houses, dealers, collectors, and courts of law.
