Aflevering Autonomous Vehicles, Public Transport And The Future Of Cities — With Maarten Sierhuis, 25 Years At The Forefront Of Ai And Autonomous Mobility

· Aflevering van de podcast: Metropolitan Mobility Podcast

What happens after autonomous technology actually works? That is the question at the heart of this conversation with Maarten Sierhuis, Vice President of the Nissan Advanced Technology Center in Silicon Valley, founder of AI company Ejenta, former NASA researcher, and one of the pioneers working on autonomous systems for more than 25 years. While public discussions often focus on robotaxis and self-driving cars, this episode explores a much larger challenge: how autonomous systems can be integrated into society. Drawing on experiences from Nissan's autonomous mobility pilots in Japan, observations of Waymo in San Francisco, healthcare AI applications, and lessons from NASA's work on human-robot collaboration, Sierhuis argues that technology is no longer the primary obstacle. The harder questions are: -  How do we validate autonomous systems?  -  Who certifies safety?  -  How do governments oversee autonomous operations?  -  How do humans and AI agents cooperate?  -  How do autonomous systems create public value?  -  And who ultimately pays for it?  One of the key insights from the discussion is that an autonomous vehicle carrying a single passenger is not automatically a mobility solution. Real value emerges when autonomous systems become part of a broader network designed around public goals, operational efficiency and societal needs. The conversation also explores why the challenges facing autonomous mobility are remarkably similar to those facing healthcare AI: trust, regulation, certification and the role of humans in the loop. Rather than asking whether AI can replace people, this episode asks a more important question: How do we build systems in which humans, AI and autonomous agents can safely cooperate? A thoughtful discussion about cities, mobility, governance, artificial intelligence and the future relationship between people and autonomous systems.
